LAZZARO. – Russian Raskolnik, died in 1681. The documents designate him as a priest of Romanoborisoglevsk (government of Jaroslav); but he carried out his activity in Moscow alongside Patriarch Giuseppe. Later he took an active part in the struggle against the reforms of Patriarch Nikon. For this reason he was confined in Siberia, from there transferred to the monastery of Pustozersk in northern Russia, and finally brought to Moscow, where he was condemned. In 1681 he was burned at the stake together with Avvakum, Teodoro, and Epifanio.
Two of his pamphlets have been preserved: Lo siendo dell'ortodossia and La questione religiosa del beatissimo patriarca. L. is cited by Catholics for his opinion in favor of the Immaculate Conception.
