LAZARUS. - Russian Raskolnik, d. 1681. The documents designate him as priest of Romanoborisoglevsk (government of Yaroslavl); but he carried out his activity in Moscow alongside the patriarch Joseph. Later he took an active part in the struggle against the reforms of the patriarch Nikon. For this cause he was confined in Siberia, from there transferred to the monastery of Pustozersk in northern Russia, and finally summoned to Moscow, where he was condemned. In 1681 he died burned at the stake together with Avvakum, Theodore and Epiphanius.
Two of his pamphlets survive: The Defense of Orthodoxy and The Religious Question of the Most Blessed Patriarch. L. is cited by Catholics for his judgment in favor of the Immaculate Conception.
