LAZARUS. - A Russian raskolnik, d. 1681. Documents designate him as a priest of Romano-Borisoglebsk (Yaroslavl' government); but he carried on his activity in Moscow alongside Patriarch Iosif. Later he took an active part in the struggle against the reforms of Patriarch Nikon. For this cause he was exiled to Siberia, thence transferred to the Pustozersk monastery in northern Russia, and finally brought to Moscow, where he was condemned. In 1681 he died burned at the stake together with Avvakum, Feodor, and Epiphanius.
Two of his pamphlets are preserved: *The Shield of Orthodoxy* and *The Religious Question of the Most Blessed Patriarch*. L. is cited by Catholics for his sentence in favor of the Immaculate Conception.
