MACARIO (CIRILLO V). – Coptic Uniate priest, born at Scenaineh (diocese of Thebes, Egypt) on 19 February 1867,
died in Beirut on 18 May 1921. From 17 March 1895 he was patriarchal vicar of the Coptic Uniates; on 19 June 1899 he became Coptic Catholic Patriarch of Alexandria, taking the name Cirillo V. Holy See, in 1908 he was obliged to resign and joined the dissidents; but on 9 March 1912 he made his public retraction.
While still a Catholic, M. wrote the two works: L'Eglise copte, sa foi d'aujourd'hui comparée avec la foi de ses Pères (Cairo 1893); Histoire de l'Eglise alexandrine (ibid. 1894). During the period of his estrangement from the Church of Rome he composed the treatise, published in Switzerland immediately after his death, La constitution divine de l'Eglise (Bern 1922).
