MACARIUS (Cyril V). - A Coptic Uniate priest, b. at Scenaineh (diocese of Thebes, Egypt) on 19 Feb. 1867, d. at Beirut on 18 May 1921. From 17 March 1895 he was patriarchal vicar of the Uniate Copts, and on 19 June 1899 he became Coptic Catholic Patriarch of Alexandria under the name of Cyril V. Following disagreements with the Holy See, he was obliged to resign in 1908 and joined the dissidents; but on 9 March 1912 he publicly recanted.
While still a Catholic, M. wrote two works: *L'Église copte, sa foi d'aujourd'hui comparée avec la foi de ses Pères* (Cairo 1893); *Histoire de l'Église alexandrine* (ibid. 1894). During the period of his separation from the Church of Rome he composed the treatise, published in Switzerland shortly after his death, *La constitution divine de l'Église* (Berne 1922).
