PASCARELLA, CESARE. - Poet, b. in Rome on 28 Apr. 1858, d. there on 8 May 1940.
He made his debut as a poet with Romanesco sonnets, which appeared in Capitan Fracassa, in which a thoughtful and melancholic personality of his was gradually taking shape. But his tendency toward narrative, toward objective representation yet transfigured by an intense lyrical ferment, became concentrated and organized, under Carducci's influence, in attempts of greater commitment (Il morto di campagna, 1884), until it opened out into the broad historical visions of Villa Glori (1886) and La scoperta dell'America (1894): epic brought back to its most genuine sources and placed once more in the mouth of a naive Trastevere rhapsode, who, stripping it of every legendary aura, gives it a realistic relief and makes it almost contemporary. Signs of weariness, beyond some gaps in the historical development, are evident in the 350 sonnets of Storia nostra, an Italian epic from the founding of Rome onward.
P.'s anticlericalism, which appears declared and convinced in certain sonnets, is founded, more than on dogmatic or ethical motives, on the polemic, common to other writers of his time, concerning the temporal dominion.
