PAUCAPALEA (Pocapaglia). - Decretist; nothing is known of his life. It is commonly held that he was a monk, though it is not known whether he was a professor at Bologna and a collaborator of Gratian or merely his disciple; some authors say he was a bishop. His origin is entirely unknown.
He is remembered in canon law as the first glossator of Gratian's Decretum, and his interpretations and annotations were called paleae. Surviving his master, he was the head of the school of the decretists (v.). He gathered his work as a glossator into a Summa (ca. 1140-48; 1143-44 according to others). He also wrote certain historiae, that is, illustrations of passages of Sacred Scripture already cited in the Decretum or put forward as examples. Even amid the uncertainty of concrete data, the paleae make it possible to number him among the best interpreters of the Decretum.
