PELLEGRINO LAZIOSI, saint. - Born into a noble family after 1320 at Forlì, died there on 1 May 1402. Having converted to the religious life after a vision of the Virgin, he went to Siena, where he assumed the habit of the Servants of Mary.
Anachronistically, ancient writers would have him received into the Order by s. Filippo Benizi (d. in 1285). Having returned to his homeland at the behest of his superiors, he led a penitential life, enduring with heroic patience a painful ulcer on one leg, from which he was then miraculously healed when the limb was about to be amputated. At his death he immediately received public cult, subsequently approved by Paolo V in 1609; the cause was regularly introduced, and Benedetto XIII canonized him on 27 Dec. 1726. Feast day: 1 May.
