PETER MONGUS. - Monophysite patriarch of Alexandria, b. at the beginning of the 5th century, d. 29 Oct. 489. He was probably a deacon of Dioscorus of Alexandria and his companion in exile.
Having returned to his homeland, he headed, together with Timothy Aelurus, the Monophysite party in the struggle against Dioscorus's Chalcedonian successor, Proterius, who was killed in a popular riot. He then succeeded, through secret machinations, in isolating Timothy Salophaciolus and in having himself elected patriarch of Alexandria in his place (477), but, opposed by the emperor Zeno, he was forced to flee, wandering from house to house. He was officially reinstated in his dignity when in 482 he gave his adherence to Zeno's Henotikon, which, however, if on the one hand implicitly entailed the repudiation of the tome of St. Leo the Great and of the Council of Chalcedon, on the other was far from satisfying the extremist current of the Monophysite party: most fierce was the opposition of the monks, who refused to communicate with him, remaining without a patriarch; whence their name of "acephali" (v.). M., then torn between the desire to preserve the Emperor's friendship and that of coming to an agreement with the more intransigent Monophysites, behaved in an ambiguous manner, deserving to be described as "one of the most skilful opportunists that Byzantine theology has created" (L. Duchesne). His name is entered in the Monophysite calendar.
