PONTA GROSSA, Diocese of. – A city and diocese in the State of Paraná in Brazil. It covers an area of 40,000 sq. km. with a population of 350,000 inhabitants, of whom 320,000 are Catholics. It comprises 23 parishes served by 18 diocesan priests and 64 regular clergy, has a seminary, 7 male religious communities and 30 female (Ann. Pont., 1952, p. 322).
The diocese was created by Pope Pius XI with the apostolic constitution Quum in dies of 10 May 1926, by separating it from the Diocese of Curitiba, which was simultaneously raised to metropolitan status; the episcopal see of the new diocese was established in the city of P. G., where the church in honour of St Anne was elevated to the rank and dignity of a cathedral. The diocese is a suffragan of Curitiba.
