PONTA GROSSA, DIOCESE of. – City and diocese in the State of Paraná, Brazil. It has an area of 40,000 sq km and a population of 350,000 inhabitants, of whom 320,000 are Catholics. It has 23 parishes served by 18 diocesan priests and 64 religious priests; it has one seminary, 7 male and 30 female religious communities (Ann. Pont., 1952, p. 322).
The diocese was created by Pope Pius XI through the apostolic constitution Quum in dies of 10 May 1926, by division from the diocese of Curityba, which was simultaneously elevated to a metropolitan see; the episcopal see of the new diocese was established in the city of P. G., where the church dedicated to S. Anna was raised to the rank and dignity of a cathedral. The diocese is suffragan to Curityba.
