PONTA GROSSA, DIOCESE OF. - City and diocese in the State of Paraná in Brazil. It has an area of 40,000 sq km with a population of 350,000 inhabitants, of whom 320,000 are Catholics. It has 23 parishes served by 18 diocesan priests and 64 regulars, a seminary, 7 male religious communities and 30 female ones (Ann. Pont., 1952, p. 322).

The diocese was created by Pope Pius XI with the apostolic constitution Quum in dies of 10 May 1926 by dismemberment from the diocese of Curityba, at the same time elevated to metropolitan rank; the episcopal see of the new diocese was fixed in the city of P. G., where the church in honor of St. Anne was raised to the rank and dignity of cathedral. The diocese is a suffragan of Curityba.
