It has an area of approx. 100,000 sq. km. with 600,000 inhabitants, of whom 500,000 are Catholic; it comprises 25 parishes, with 11 diocesan priests and 35 regular clergy, 2 male and 11 female religious communities (1948).
The diocese was created by Pope Pius XI with the apostolic constitution *Quum in dies* of 10 May 1926, by separating it from the archdiocese of Curityba, elevating to cathedral status the church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and St. Sebastian. The diocese is a suffragan of Curityba.
