It has an area of approximately 100,000 sq km, with 600,000 inhabitants, of whom 500,000 are Catholics; it has 25 parishes, with 11 diocesan priests and 35 regular clergy, 2 male religious communities and 11 female ones (1948).
The diocese was created by Pope Pius XI with the apostolic constitution Quam in dies of 10 May 1926, by dismemberment of the archdiocese of Curityba, raising to cathedral status the church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and to St. Sebastian. The diocese is a suffragan of Curityba.
