JACCARD, FRANÇOIS, BEATO

JACCARD, François, Blessed. - Born on 6 September 1799 at Onion (Haute-Savoie), he entered the seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris in Aug. 1821. A priest in 1823, he left in July for the missions of Cochinchina, where persecution was raging.

In July 1827 he was summoned to Hué by King Minh Mạng, who made him his interpreter. Condemned to death a first time in 1830, his sentence was commuted to that of supervised residence at Hué. In 1832 he was appointed pro-vicar and on 20 Dec. of the same year coadjutor of Msgr. J. Taberd. He was unable to receive consecration, but from 1833 he assumed the government of the mission. Condemned to death again, his sentence was commuted to that of life imprisonment; on 21 Sept. 1839, however, he was strangled at Gian-bieu. Declared venerable on 19 June 1840, he was beatified on 27 May 1900.
