JACCARD, FRANÇOIS, Blessed. - Born on 6 Sept. 1799 at Onion (Haute-Savoie), he entered in Aug. 1821 the seminary of the Paris Foreign Missions. Ordained priest in 1823, he left in July for the missions of Cochinchina where persecution was raging.
In July 1827 he was summoned to Huế by King Minh-mạng, who made him his interpreter. Condemned to death for the first time in 1830, the sentence was commuted to that of house arrest in Huế. In 1832 he was named provincial, and on 20 Dec. of the same year coadjutor to Mgr J. Taberd. He could not receive consecration, but from 1833 he assumed the government of the mission. Condemned again to death, the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment; on 21 Sept. 1839, however, he was strangled at Gian-bieu. Declared Venerable on 19 June 1840, he was beatified on 27 May 1900.
