JACCARD, FRANÇOIS, blessed. - B. on 6 Sept. 1799 at Onion (Haute-Savoie), he entered the seminary of the Paris Foreign Missions in Aug. 1821. Ordained priest in 1823, he left in July for the missions of Cochinchina, where persecution was raging.

In July 1827 he was summoned to Hué by King Minhmang, who made him his interpreter. Sentenced to death for the first time in 1830, his penalty was commuted to supervised residence at Hué. In 1832 he was appointed provicar and on 20 Dec. of the same year coadjutor of Msgr J. Taberd. He was unable to receive consecration, but from 1833 he assumed the government of the mission. Condemned to death again, his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment; on 21 Sept. 1839, however, he was strangled at Gian-bieu. Declared venerable on 19 June 1840, he was beatified on 27 May 1900.
