POST, ALBERT HERMANN. — Jurist, born in Bremen on 18 Oct. 1839, died there on 25 Aug. 1895. After completing his legal studies, he served as a judge at the Obergericht and subsequently at the Court of Appeal of his native city.
He devoted himself to the study of the law of primitive peoples, conducting his research from a sociological and comparative perspective. His works, inspired by the positivist principles of the time, are not free from the insertion of many crude tables; yet they merit recognition for having opened the series of studies in the field of comparative law. Among them are to be noted: *Entwurf eines gemeinsamen deutschen und hansestädtischen Privatrechts auf Grundlage der modernen Volkswirtschaft*, 3 vols. (Bremen 1866–71); *Grundlagen des Rechts und Grundzüge seiner Entwicklungsgeschichte* (Oldenburg 1884); *Grundriss der ethnologischen Jurisprudenz*, 2 vols. (ibid. 1894–95; Italian trans. by P. Bonfante and C. Longo, Turin 1906–1908).
