POST, ALBERT HERMANN. - Jurist, b. in Bremen on 8 Oct. 1839, d. there on 25 Aug. 1895. Having completed his legal studies, he was a judge at the Obergericht and subsequently at the Court of Appeal of his native city.
He devoted himself to the study of the law of primitive peoples, conducting his research from a sociological and comparative standpoint; his works, inspired by the positivist principles characteristic of the period, are not free from sometimes glaring inaccuracies; yet they have the merit of having inaugurated the series of studies in the field of comparative law. Among them should be mentioned: Entwurf eines gemeinen deutschen und hansestadtbremischen Privatrechts auf Grundlage der modernen Volkswirtschaft, 3 vols. (Bremen 1866-71); Grundlagen des Rechts und Grundzüge seiner Entwicklungsgeschichte (Oldenburg 1884); Grundriss der ethnologischen Jurisprudenz, 2 vols. (ibid. 1894-95; Italian trans. by P. Bonfante and C. Longo, Turin 1906-1908).
