POST, ALBERT HERMANN. - Jurist, b. in Bremen on 8 Oct. 1839, d. there on 25 Aug. 1895. After completing his legal studies, he was a judge at the Obergericht and subsequently at the Court of Appeal of his native city.
He devoted himself to the study of the law of primitive peoples, conducting his research from a sociological and comparative point of view; his works, inspired by the positivist principles characteristic of the era, are not free from inaccuracies that are at times crude; but they have the merit of having opened the series of studies in the field of comparative law. Among them should be remembered: Entwurf eines gemeinen deutschen und hansestadtbremischen Privatrechts auf Grundlage der modernen Volkswirtschaft, 3 vols. (Bremen 1866-71); Grundlagen des Rechts und Grundzüge seiner Entwicklungsgeschichte (Oldenburg 1884); Grundriss der ethnologischen Jurisprudenz, 2 vols. (ibid. 1894-95; Italian trans. by P. Bonfante and C. Longo, Turin 1906-1908).
