PEROZZI, SILVIO. – Jurist, born in Vicenza on 2 Dec. 1857, died in Bologna on 4 Jan. 1931. He completed his studies at the University of Padua, where he graduated in law in 1879 and in literature in 1880. He was professor of Roman law first at Perugia and then, as a full professor, at Macerata (from 1885), Messina (from 1889), Parma (from 1891), and finally Bologna (from 1902). In 1928 he was appointed national fellow of the Accademia dei Lincei.
A representative of the dogmatic approach, he was one of the most original scholars; among his works, almost all of a critical nature, particular mention should be made of his Bolognese inaugural lecture of 1903, *Le obbligazioni romane*, which marked an epoch in the study of this fundamental institution. His *Istituzioni di diritto romano* (2 vols., Florence 1906; 2nd ed., Rome 1927) are especially classic, above all for the enormous number of observations and the issues raised. His numerous contributions, scattered in journals and academic proceedings, have recently been collected under the title *Scritti giuridici* (3 vols., Milan 1948).
