RACLOT, MATHILDE. - Religious of the Ladies of St. Maur and missionary, b. at Surauville (Vosges) in 1814, d. at Tokyo in 1911.

Having entered at the age of 18 the Institute of the Teachers of Charity of the Holy Child Jesus, founded by Fr. N. Barré and called "Ladies of St. Maur," she proved herself a remarkable educator at Bagnoles, at Cette and at Bergiera, until in 1852 she departed for Malaysia at the head of a group of sisters. Having landed at Penang, she set her hand to the most urgent works, founding several houses with adjoining buildings for foundling hospitals, nurseries, orphanages, workshops, and schools for native apprentices. She displayed the same zeal in Japan, where she was called by the apostolic vicar in 1872 and where she founded the house of Tokyo in 1875 and that of Shidsuoka in 1903. She thus won for herself a reputation as an incomparable teacher and as a mother of thousands of orphans.
