RACLOT, MATHILDE. - Religious of the Ladies
of St. Maur and missionary, born at Surauville (Vosgi)
in 1814, died at Tokio in 1911.
Having entered, at the age of 18, the Institute of the Teachers of Cha-
rity of the Holy Child Jesus, founded by Fr. N. Barré and called
“Ladies of St. Maur,” she proved to be a remarkable edu-
cator at Bagnoles, Cette, and Bergiera, until in 1852 she left
for Malaya at the head of a group of sisters. Having landed
at Penang, she set about the most urgent works, founding
several houses with attached buildings for foundling homes, nurseries,
orphanages, workshops, and schools for native apprentices.
She displayed the same zeal in Japan, where she was called by the
apostolic vicar in 1872 and where she founded, in 1875, the house of
Tokio and, in 1903, that of Shidsuoka. Thus she gained
a reputation as an incomparable teacher and mother to thousands
of orphans.
