**RIEMANN, Karl Wilhelm Julius HUGO** – Musicologist, born in Gross Mehla on 18 July 1849, died in Leipzig on 10 July 1919.
He studied in Berlin, Tübingen, and Leipzig; taught in Bamberg (1880–81), Hamburg (1882–90), Sonderhausen and Wiesbaden (1892–95), and then in Leipzig from 1901, where he served as director of the *Collegium musicum* from 1908.
Through his multifaceted activity as a scholar, researcher, historian, and philologist, he founded what the Germans call *Musikwissenschaft*—that is, “musical science.” Evidence of this is his volume *Grundriss der Musikwissenschaft*, published in
1908. Among his most important publications are: *Handbuch der Harmonielehre* (Leipzig 1887), *Geschichte der Theorie im 9
19. Jahrhundert* (ibid. 1898), *Handbuch der Musikgeschichte* (4 vols., ibid. 1901–13), and so on, to which must be added the famous *Musiklexikon* of 1882, updated until 1929 (2 vols., 11th ed.) by A. Einstein, Berlin 1929.*
