RIEMANN, KARL WILHELM JULIUS HUGO. - Musicologist, b. at Gross Mehlra on 18 July 1849, d. at Leipzig on 10 July 1919.
He studied in Berlin, Tübingen, and Leipzig; he taught in Bamberg (1880-81), in Hamburg (1882-90), in Sonderhausen and Wiesbaden (1892-93), then in Leipzig from 1901, where he was director of the « Collegium musicum » from 1908.
Through his multifaceted activity as a scholar and researcher, historian and philologist, he founded what the Germans call “Musikwissenschaft,” that is, “musical science.” Evidence of this is his small volume Grundriss der Musikwissenschaft, published in 1908. Among his most important publications should be mentioned: Handbuch d. Harmonielehre (Leipzig 1887), Geschichte d. Musiktheorie in 9.-10. Jahr. (ibid. 1898), Handbuch d. Musikgeschichte (4 vols., ibid. 1901-13), etc.; to these must be added the famous Musiklexikon of 1882, brought up to date through 1929 (2 vols., 11th ed.) by A. Einstein, Berlin 1929.
