Founded in 1890 by the lawyer Serafino Giustiniani at the outset of a new historical phase in Church-State relations in Italy.
The post-Risorgimento ecclesiastical legislation had now completed its entire evolutionary cycle, and the slow movement that was to lead to the new regulation established by the 1929 Concordat was already beginning to take shape. Even before this Concordat established new connections between canon law and state law, when the new canon law and the reform of the Roman Curia had drawn the world's attention, the Rivista di diritto ecclesiastico italiano, through the work of Monsignor Professor Cesare Badii, who directed it for many years with the lawyer Michele Zacchi, introduced among its sections one dedicated to canon jurisprudence and legislation and their commentary.
In 1908, the Rivista di diritto ecclesiastico italiano adopted the title it still retains today, *Il diritto ecclesiastico*, without altering its scientific and practical approach. It welcomed the contributions of the most distinguished scholars, regardless of their tendencies, while maintaining substantial adherence and fidelity to Catholic thought. Today (1952), published by the A. Giuffrè house in quarterly issues, it is edited by Professors D'Avack, Petroncelli, and Scavo Lombardo, with the collaboration of nearly all the leading experts in the field, both ecclesiastical and lay, Italian and foreign.
