RIVISTA DI FILOSOFIA NEOSCOLASTICA. - It appeared in January 1909, under the editorship of p. Agostino Gemelli and Giulio Canella (who withdrew from the editorial board after a short time), and continued uninterruptedly, even during the two great world conflicts. From Florence, where its first issue appeared, it soon moved to Milan, where it is published under the auspices of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Università cattolica del S. Cuore.
Founded at a time when the thought of s. Tommaso and scholasticism in general were unknown and disparaged, the journal set itself the task of reworking the fundamental doctrines of classical metaphysics and illustrating them, from a theoretical and historical standpoint, in relation to modern culture and contemporary needs. In the face of positivism, it adopted a clear position concerning the relations between philosophy and science, promoting psychological and biological research. Italian idealism, moreover, provided the occasion for careful studies, debates, and temperate polemics. Against the immanentist tendencies of Gentile’s actualism and Croce’s historicism, the journal defended the value of ancient metaphysics, which it still upholds against the trends of contemporary irrationalism.
