It was first published in January 1909, edited by Fr. Agostino Gemelli and Giulio Canella (who soon withdrew from the editorial board), and continued uninterrupted throughout the two great world conflicts. After its first issue appeared in Florence, it soon moved to Milan, where it has been published under the auspices of the Faculty of Philosophy at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.
Born at a time when the thought of St. Thomas and Scholasticism in general were unknown and despised, the journal set out to rework the fundamental doctrines of classical metaphysics and to illustrate them—from both a theoretical and historical standpoint—in light of modern culture and contemporary needs. In response to positivism, it took a clear stance on the relationship between philosophy and science, promoting psychological and biological research. Italian idealism then provided the occasion for thorough studies, vigorous debates, and calm polemics. Against the immanentist tendencies of Gentile’s actualism and Croce’s historicism, the journal defended the value of ancient metaphysics, which it continues to uphold against the irrationalist trends of contemporary thought.
