REVIEW OF NEOSCHOLASTIC PHILOSOPHY. - It appeared in January 1909, directed by Fr. Agostino Gemelli and by Giulio Canella (who after a short time withdrew from the editorial board), and continued its life without interruption, even during the two great wars. From Florence, where the first issue appeared, it soon moved to Milan, where it is published under the care of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.
Born at a time when the thought of St. Thomas and Scholasticism in general were unknown and despised, the journal set out to rework the fundamental doctrines of classical metaphysics and to illustrate them, from a theoretical and historical point of view, in relation to modern culture and its present needs. In the face of positivism it took a clear position on the relations between philosophy and science, promoting psychological and biological research. Italian idealism, moreover, was the occasion for careful studies, for battles and for serene polemics. Against the immanentist tendencies of Gentile's actualism and Croce's historicism the journal defended the value of ancient metaphysics, which it still champions against the currents of contemporary irrationalism.
