SAN GIORGIO, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF. - Located in the northern region of Colombia.
On 12 June 1924 the territory was erected as an apostolic prefecture of the Sinú and entrusted to the Foreign Missions of Burgos. On 12 January 1931 the name was changed to that of the apostolic prefecture of St George, which on 10 March 1950 was elevated to an apostolic vicariate, still entrusted to the Institute of Burgos. It has an area of approx. 21,500 sq km with a population of approx. 100,000 inhabitants, the vast majority of whom are Catholic, though their way of life is all too often similar to that of pagans. The missionaries number about twenty, assisted by brothers and 26 sisters. There are 27 seminarians, 24 catechists, and 148 schools.
