SAN GIUSEPPE DELLE AMAZZONI, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE OF. - It is located in the north-eastern regions of Peru.

These regions, which belonged to the apostolic vicariate of St. Leo of the Amazons, on 4 October 1912 were erected into the apostolic prefecture of Putumayo, which was entrusted to the English Franciscans; however, overcome by difficulties, they had to abandon the mission, which in 1922 was again incorporated into the apostolic vicariate of St. Leo (Archivio della S. Congr. di Prop. Fide, ponenza 3/1921). On 13 July 1945 the aforementioned regions were constituted as the apostolic prefecture of S. G. delle A., entrusted to the Franciscans. In one part of the territory the Gospel had never been preached.

It has an area of 135,000 sq. km. with 45,000 inhabitants, of whom 43,000 are Catholics, 8 missionaries, 3 brothers, 2 major seminarians, 6 primary stations, 5 churches, 5 chapels, 40 elementary schools.
