San Giuseppe delle Amazzoni, Apostolic Prefecture of

SAN GIUSEPPE DELLE AMAZZONI, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE of. - It is located in the north-eastern regions of Peru.

These regions, which belonged to the apostolic vicariate of S. Leone delle Amazzoni, were erected on 4 Oct. 1912 into the apostolic prefecture of Putumayo, which was entrusted to the English Franciscans; however, overcome by difficulties, they had to abandon the mission, which in 1922 was again incorporated into the apostolic vicariate of S. Leone (Archive of the S. Congr. of Prop. Fide, report 3/1921). On 13 July 1945 the aforesaid regions were constituted as the apostolic prefecture of S. G. delle A., entrusted to the Franciscans. In part of the territory the Gospel had never been preached.

It has an area of 135,000 sq. km., with 45,000 inhabitants, of whom 43,000 are Catholics; missionaries 8, brothers 3, major seminarians 2, principal stations 6, churches 5, chapels 5, elementary schools 40.
