SAN GABRIELE DELL'ADDOLORATA VICARIATE APOSTOLIC of MARAÑON. — Situated in the northern regions of Peru.
In 1912 the Passionists went there and accepted the parishes of the provinces of S. Martino and Huallaga; on 27 February 1921 the apostolic prefecture of S. G. was erected, with territory detached from the apostolic vicariate of S. Leone delle Amazzoni (now Iquitos); on 5 June 1936 it was elevated to an apostolic vicariate. It has an area of approximately 34,965 sq km and a population of approximately 70,000, of whom 66,000 are Catholics and only 200 Protestants. Pagans represent 5% of the total population. There are 16 missionaries, 3 brothers, 10 sisters, 8 quasi-parishes, 12 secondary stations, 5 churches, 18 chapels, and 5 elementary schools.
