ST. GABRIEL OF THE SORROWFUL VIRGIN OF MARAÑÓN, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF. - Located in the northern regions of Peru.

In 1912 the Passionists went there and accepted the parishes of the provinces of S. Martino and Huallaga; on 27 Feb. 1921 the apostolic prefecture of S. G. was erected with territory detached from the apostolic vicariate of S. Leone delle Amazzoni (now Iquitos); on 5 June 1936 it was elevated to an apostolic vicariate. It has an area of about 34,965 sq km and a population of about 70,000 inhabitants, of whom 66,000 are Catholics and only 200 Protestants. Pagans represent 5% of the total population. There are 16 missionaries, 3 brothers, 10 sisters, 8 quasi-parishes, 12 secondary stations, 5 churches, 18 chapels, 5 elementary schools.
