Founded at the end of the 10th century, it was enriched by the Empress Adelaide. The abbey church is of the Lombard type, with three naves, a dome, and shows reminiscences of Byzantine and Provençal art. The cloister preserves Roman marbles. Beneath the monastery, members of the Doria family were buried from 1275 to 1305; since 1550 it has been under their patronage. The adjoining building was restored in 1933–34.
