SAN FRUTTUOSO. – An ancient Benedictine abbey in the village of the same name in the municipality of Camogli, in the province and archdiocese of Genoa.
Founded at the end of the tenth century, it was enriched by the empress Adelaide. The abbey church is Lombard in type, with three naves and a cupola, and displays reminiscences of Byzantine and Provençal art. The cloister preserves Roman marbles. Members of the Doria family were buried beneath the monastery from 1275 to 1305; since 1550, it has been under their patronage. The adjoining building was restored in 1933–34.
