Archdiocese and city in the State of California (U.S.A.). As of 1951, San Francisco has a population of 3,031,560 inhabitants spread over an area of 16,856 square miles. Catholics number 725,000. There are 873 priests, of whom 405 are religious from 13 different congregations; 200 parishes, 153 chapels, 40 missions, and 21 stations. There are also 149 brothers and 39 female congregations (2,339 sisters), 319 seminarians in the two seminaries, and
the diocese of Grass Valley on February 3, 1868; on May 28, 1886, to form the diocese of Sacramento with the addition of 10 counties in California and 1 in Nevada.
