ALAMANY Y CONILL, JOSÉ SÁDOC

ALAMANY Y CONILL, JOSÉ SÁDOC. — Dominican, born on 13 June 1814 in Vich (Spain) and died on 14 April 1888 in Valenza. He was first in Viterbo, then in Memphis (in America), where in 1848 he became provincial of the Dominicans of America, and, two years later, was elected bishop of Monterey and Los Angeles. In this capacity he took part in the Council of Baltimore of 1852 and subsequently in the First Vatican Council. The successive divisions of his original diocese, as a result of which he became metropolitan, with his see in San Francisco, testify to his fruitful activity, including the foundation of more than 150 churches, 6 colleges, 18 schools, and 4 hospitals. He resigned in 1884 and returned to Valenza with the title of archbishop of Pelusium.
