ALAMANY Y CONILL, JOSÉ SADOC

ALAMANY Y CONILL, JOSÉ SADOC. - Dominican, b. 13 June 1814 at Vich (Spain) and d. 14 Apr. 1888 at Valencia. He was first at Viterbo, then at Memphis (in America), where in 1848 he became provincial of the American Dominicans, and two years later was elected bishop of Monterey and Los Angeles. As such he took part in the Council of Baltimore in 1852 and later in the Vatican Council. The subsequent divisions of his original diocese, by which he became metropolitan with his see at San Francisco, bear witness to his fruitful activity, with the founding of over 150 churches, 6 colleges, 18 schools, and 4 hospitals. He resigned in 1884 and returned to Valencia with the title of archbishop of Pelusium.
