ALAND, JAN. - Polish Jesuit, born in Lviv in 1590, entered the Society around 1619, died in Nieśwież on March 13, 1641. Professor of rhetoric at Jarosław, he held various offices in the Order at Połock and Riga, and finally became preposito at Nieśwież, where he formed a friendship with Prince Nicholas Radziwiłł Sierotka, brother of Cardinal George Radziwiłł. He wrote several ascetical works in Polish and Latin, including *Meditazioni (Rozmyślania)*, Wilno 1617, to which he added a translation of St. Augustine’s *Soliloquies* (seven editions, 1620–1788). He promoted devotion to St. Michael the Archangel.
