Aland, Jan

ALAND, JAN. - Polish Jesuit, born in Lviv in 1590, he entered the Society around 1619, died at Nieswieś on 13 March 1641. A professor of rhetoric at Jarosław, he held various offices of the Order at Polotsk and Riga, and finally that of superior at Nieswieś, where he formed a friendship with Prince Nicholas Radziwiłł Sierotka, brother of Cardinal George Radziwiłł. He wrote several ascetical works in Polish and in Latin, among them Meditations (Rozmyślania), Vilnius 1617, to which he added a translation of the Soliloquies of St. Augustine (seven editions 1620-1788). He spread devotion to St. Michael the Archangel.
