ALAND, JAN. – Polish Jesuit, born in Lviv in 1590, entered the Society around 1619, died in Nieswieś on 13 March 1641. Professor of rhetoric at Jarosław, he held various offices of the Order in Polock and Riga, and finally became superior at Nieswieś, where he formed a friendship with Prince Nicola Radziwiłł Sierotka, brother of Cardinal Giorgio Radziwiłł. He wrote several ascetical works in Polish and Latin, including Meditazioni (Rozmyślania), Wilno 1617, to which he added a translation of the Soliloquies of St Augustine (seven editions, 1620–1788). He promoted devotion to St Michael the Archangel.
