SASKATOON, DIOCESE of. - Diocese and city in the province of Saskatchewan in western Canada.
The diocese has a population of 150,052 inhabitants, of whom 28,862 are Catholics, distributed among 35 parishes and 44 chapels served by 22 diocesan and 39 regular priests; it has 1 seminary, 21 male and 19 female religious communities; 3 hospitals, 1 college, and 1 home for the elderly (Ann. Pont. 1952, p. 369).
The diocese of S. was created by Pius XI with the apostolic constitution Ecclesiarium omnium cura of 3 June 1933, by dismemberment from the dioceses of Prince Albert S. and Regina. The first parish of S. was the parish of S. Paolo, erected on the site purchased in 1901 by Fr. J. H. Eymard. The diocese is suffragan to Regina, and for the Byzantine-rite faithful there is the apostolic exarchate of Saskatchewan.
