REGINA, Archdiocese of. - In the southeastern part of the province of Saskatchewan (Canada).

The Catholic population is 69,889. There are 91 parishes and 126 missions. The clergy consists of 98 diocesan priests and 76 religious.

The first priest to enter the region was Fr. Joseph-Norbert Provencher, a missionary at St-Boniface, in March 1819, who visited the banks of the Qu'Appelle River. Fr. Belcourt replaced him in 1886, and Fr. Ritchot founded the present parish of Lebret, where shortly afterward the Oblates of Mary Immaculate succeeded him.

The small city, called R. in honor of Queen Victoria, was founded in 1881; and afterward it became the capital of the province. In 1883 the first parish church was built. Even together with the neighboring missions, the parish counted barely a few hundred Catholics.

R. was elevated to a diocese on March 14, 1910, and to an archdiocese on Dec. 4, 1915. Today it has as suffragans the dioceses of Prince Albert, Gravelbourg, Saskatoon and the nullius abbey of St. Peter of Münster. The bishops were Msgr. Olivier-Elzéar Mathieu (1911-29), James Charles Mc Guigan (1929-34), Peter Joseph Monahan (1935-47) and, from 1947, Michael Cornelius O'Neill.
