Scarampi (Scarampa), Pier Francesco

SCARAMPI (Scarampa), Pier Francesco. - Oratorian, b. in 1596 in Monferrato, d. in Rome on the Irish and the "Old Catholics," the former inclined to an accommodation with King Charles I, the latter determined to carry on the revolt until the granting of the most complete liberty of conscience, S. resolutely supported the "Old Catholics," but his intervention was not enough to prevent the triumph of the opposing faction and the conclusion of an armistice with Charles I. In May 1645 S. was recalled, but he remained on the island until the middle of 1646 as adviser to the new nuncio G. B. Rinuccini. Having returned to Rome, he became provost of his Congregation and died during the plague of 1656; he was buried in the church of Sts. Nereus and Achilleus.
