SCOPELLI, GIOVANNA, blessed. – Carmelite nun, born in Reggio Emilia in 1428, died in 1491.
She took the Carmelite habit, and upon the death of her parents devoted her inheritance to the foundation of a monastery of Carmelite nuns of the Congregation of Mantua, which began in 1485 under the title of S. Maria del Popolo. Her confessor, Fra' Angelo da Genova, drew up its Constitutions. Clement XIV approved its cult in 1771.
She worked effectively for the conversion of sinners. Her devotion to the Virgin was exceptional. Benedetto Mutto da Reggio wrote her life, which was printed several times.
