SOCIETY OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS (Dames of the Sacred Heart [Rome]). - It arose at Amiens at the beginning of the 18th century, but soon the General House, which is currently in Rome, was established in Paris. Its foundress and first superior general was St. Madeleine Sophie Barat.

Approved by Leo XII on 22 Dec. 1826 with the bull In supremo, it had its Constitutions slightly modified on 23 May 1851, which, brought into agreement with the Code, were definitively approved in 1926. The purpose of the institution is to educate girls of well-to-do condition and to promote the free elementary education of girls of the common people. The sisters also devote themselves to the Work of Retreats for people of the world and to other works of spiritual and material charity. At present they number 6519, with 192 houses.
