STOECKER, ADOLF. - German politician and sociologist, Protestant, b. 11 Nov. 1835 at Halberstadt, d. 8 Feb. 1909 at Gries near Bolzano. Protestant parish priest, in the period 1874-89 preacher of the court of Berlin, in that 1879-98, member of the Prussian Council (Landtag), in that 1881-1893 and 1898-1908 member of the Reichstag.

A firm opponent of liberalism and Marxism, he organized the Protestant social movement, wishing to preserve the great cities from the decadence of religious life. A powerful political orator, he fought against the influence of the Jews in political life. In 1895 he founded the Christian-Social Party, in 1897 the Free Ecclesiastical Conference. From 1892 he was editor of the religious newspaper of the German Protestants Die deutsch-evangelische Kirchenzeitung.
