STUDIEN. - Monthly cultural periodical, founded in 1878 by the Dutch Jesuits.

As early as 1868, work had begun on the plan of publishing separate pamphlets on subjects of interest to the educated public under the generic title Studiën op godsdienstig, wetenschappelijk en letterkundig gebied, and in the decade 1868-78 several of them had appeared. This led in 1878 to making the publication properly periodical, in format as well, with ten issues a year, which later became monthly. The title and subtitle did not remain unchanged over the years; in 1947 the title was: Katholiek Cultureel Tydschrift (Fortsetzung van « Studiën »), which in 1953 became: Cultureel Tydschrift, Streven.
