STUDIEN. — Monthly periodical of culture, founded in 1878 by the Dutch Jesuits.
As early as 1868, the plan had been undertaken of publishing separate pamphlets on subjects of interest to the educated public under the general title Studiën op godsdienstig, voetenschappelijk en letterkundig gebied, and several of these had appeared during the decade 1868–78. This led, in 1878, to making the publication a properly periodical one, including in format, with ten issues annually, which later became monthly. The title and subtitle did not remain unchanged over the years; in 1947 the title was: Katholiek Cultureel Tydschrift (Fortsetzung van « Studiën »), which in 1953 became: Cultureel Tydschrift, Streven.
