STUDIEN. - Monthly periodical of culture, founded in 1878 by the Dutch Jesuits.
As early as 1868, the intention had been formed to publish separate booklets on topics of interest to the cultured public under the general title Studiën op godsdienstig, wetenschappelijk en letterkundig gebied, and several had appeared during the decade 1868-78. This led in 1878 to the publication becoming a proper periodical, both in content and format, with ten annual issues, which later became monthly. The title and subtitle did not remain unchanged over the years; in 1947 the title was: Katholiek Cultureel Tydschrif "Oortstelling van 'Studiën'), which in 1953 became: Cultureel Tydschrif, Streven.
