DE KATHOLIEK. - The first Catholic scholarly journal founded in Holland after the violent Protestant persecution that had for two centuries stifled every expression of Catholic life had ceased, at least legally.
After the preparatory work of the great emancipator of Catholics, the convert Joachim George le Sage ten Broek (1775-1847), founder of several apologetic journals, Fr. van Vree, rector of the Seminary of Warmond (diocese of Haarlem), founded De K. in 1842, as a monthly journal of theology, philosophy and history. Its principal contributor was Cornelius Broere, philosopher, historian and poet.
De K. had a profound influence on the emancipation and the scholarly progress of Catholic Holland. Under this name it was published for fully 83 years. Shortly after the erection of the Catholic University of Nijmegen (1925), De K. became its official organ, under the new name of Studia Catholica, still in existence. Among its contributors are several professors of the theological and philosophical faculties of the University of Nijmegen.
