STUMPF, KILIAN. - Jesuit, missionary, b. at Würzburg on 14 Sept. 1655, d. at Peking on 24 July 1720.
Having entered the Order in 1673, he set out in 1694 for China, assigned to the mission of Peking, where he remained until his death, greatly favored by the emperor K'ang-hi, who invited him to accompany him on many journeys and appointed him president of the Tribunal of Mathematicians. As rector of the College, called the "Portuguese", of the Jesuits, at Peking, and above all during the four years (1714-18) in which he was visitor general of Japan and China, he took an active and often preponderant part in the impassioned discussions of that time concerning the Chinese Rites (v.) and the legation of Card. de Tournon. He signed with the other fathers the Brevis relatio on the decree of the emperor K'ang-hi of 30 Nov. 1700, and he gathered in his Compendium actorum Pekinensium 1705-1706, which remained in manuscript, the accounts of the legation and his diary. The Informatio pro veritate contra iniquiorem famam sparsam per Sinas (1717), in which he let his pen run beyond the necessary moderation, was placed on the Index in 1720. The Pope desired the recall of S. from China; but the latter died before the order reached his hands.
