On 30 December 1949 it was divided for the erection of that of Taipei (now an archdiocese). The remaining territory of the former mission then assumed the name of apostolic prefecture of Kaoshung. In the particular situation of the island of Formosa, due to its overpopulation (seven million natives and more than two million Chinese refugees), the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide, in order to provide more adequately for the spiritual needs of that territory, erected on 10 August 1950 the apostolic prefecture of Taichung, with the civil province of the same name, detaching it from the apostolic prefecture of Kaoshung. The new missionary circumscription was entrusted to the Society for the Foreign Missions of the United States of America (Maryknoll), as being capable of bringing a healthy dynamism to the evangelization of Formosa.
