THEODORIC (DIETRICH) OF APOLDA. - Dominican theologian, b. at Apolda in Thuringia in 1228, d. ca. 1297. He entered the Order of Preachers in 1240 at Erfurt. He wrote (ca. 1290) a Life of St. Dominic.
Quétif-Echard (v. bibl.) and others distinguish him from Theodoric of Thuringia, author of a historically well-founded Life of St. Elizabeth; differences of style are in fact observable. For the present, the problem of the origin of the two works cannot be resolved. Indications not to be overlooked for the identity of the author are the sameness of the name, of the Order, of the time of composition, of the laments over his bad eyes, besides the care taken to have and to indicate reliable sources, and finally the construction of the 2nd prologue of the Life of St. Dominic and of the Life of St. Elizabeth.
The spirituality of the Dominican Order stands out in the Life of St. Dominic as genuinely Christocentric, with the predominance of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
