TERESINA, DIOCESE of. — Suffragan of S. Luiei del Maragnano, in the State of Piaui, Brazil.
It has an area of 53,000 sq km, with a population of 347,697 inhabitants, of whom 345,597 are Catholics. It has 14 parishes, with 23 diocesan priests and 4 religious priests. It has a minor seminary, one male religious community, and 6 female communities (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 420).
The diocese was created by Pope Leone XIII by the bull Supremum Catholicum Ecclesiam, dated 20 February 1901. At first it bore the name of Piaui, later changed to that of T. on 16 December 1944. It had the following bishops: Gioachino Antonio de Almeida, Ottaviano Pereira de Albuquerque. The present bishop is H. E. R. mons. Severino Vieira de Melo, with the auxiliary H. E. R. mons. Raimondo de Castro e Silva, titular bishop of Eluza.
