UBERABA, DIOCESE OF. - City and diocese in the State of Minas Gerais (Brazil).
It has an area of 92,000 sq. km., with a population of 812,000 inhabitants, of whom 810,000 are Catholics. It comprises 44 parishes, with 39 diocesan priests and 22 regular clergy, a minor seminary, 12 male religious communities and 22 female religious communities.
The diocese was established by a conciliar decree of 29 November 1907, under the title of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and as a suffragan of the archdiocese of Mariana, from which, by another consistorial decree of 1 February 1924, Pope Pius XI transferred it to the archdiocese of Belo Horizonte. Its first bishop was Msgr. Edoardo de Silva, who died in 1924.
