XINGÚ, Prelature nullius of. - In the State of Pará in Brazil.
It has an area of 318,548 sq. km., with a population of 22,000 inhabitants, of whom 21,600 are Catholics. It has 4 parishes with 5 regular priests. The prelature nullius was created by Pope Pio XI on 16 Aug. 1934, by the apostolic constitution Animarum bonum, through the division of the archdiocese of Belém do Pará and of the prelatures of Santarém and Concezione di Araguaia; the seat of the prelature was established in the city of Porto de Moz, and the local church of S. Biagio was raised to prelatural status. Among others, the fierce Indian tribes of the Caiapós and Assurinis are found there, as well as the families of the Iurunas, Chipsias, and Curuaias natives, almost all of whom have already been baptized. The prelature is suffragan to Belém do Pará and is entrusted to the Congregation of the Most Precious Blood, with its seat at Porto de Moz, Pará.
