XINGU, Prelature of. - In the State of Pará in Brazil.

It has an area of 318,548 sq. km., with a population of 22,000 inhabitants, of whom 21,600 are Catholics. It has 4 parishes with 5 regular priests. The prelature nullius was created by Pope Pius XI on 16 Aug. 1934, with the apostolic constitution Animarum bonum, by dismemberment of the archdiocese of Belém do Pará and of the prelatures of Santarém and of the Conception of Araguaia, fixing the seat of the prelature in the city of Porto de Moz and elevating the local church of St. Blaise to prelatial status. In it are found, among others, the fierce Indian tribes of the Caiapós and the Assurinis, as well as the families of the Iurunas, Chipsias and Curuaias natives, already almost all baptized. The prelature is a suffragan of Belém do Pará and is entrusted to the Congregation of the Most Precious Blood with its seat at Porto de Moz, Pará.
