TRAUBE, LUDWIC. - Philologist, medievalist, and one of the most distinguished paleographers, b. in Berlin on 9 June 1861, d. in Munich on 19 May 1907.
Scholar and university lecturer. His work in the field of paleography is particularly noteworthy for the new direction he gave to it and for the fundamental contributions he made. In addition to his writings of a philological character on classical Latin authors, particular mention should be made of: Lehre und Geschichte der Abkürzungen (1899), in which the history of abbreviations is traced for the first time; Paläographische Anzeigen I and II (1900), against the antiquated methodology of paleographic studies; Perrona Scottorum (1900), a fundamental study of that scriptorium and of Irish script; Die Geschichte der tironischen Noten (1901); Nomina sacra (1907), under both its philological and paleographic aspects; Vorlesungen und Abhandlungen (1909, 1911, 1920), edited by F. Boll, P. Lehmann and S. Brandt, a posthumous collection of his lectures on paleography and of some of the monographs mentioned above.
