HUGO ETHERIANUS. - Theologian and cardinal, b. at Pisa at the beginning of the 12th century, d. in 1182.

Together with his brother Leo, called the Tuscan (Leo Tuscus), he was one of those numerous Latins who, admitted to the Byzantine court of Manuel Comnenus (1143-80), occupied an important place there. He took an active part in the diplomatic relations that were established between the Em-

Spiritus Sanctus ex utroque, Patre scilicet et Filio procedat, contra Graecos (Basel 1543: PL 202, 227-396), in which he proves his thesis with numerous patristic texts; soon translated into Greek by the author himself, it exercised a beneficial influence; indeed, to it is due, in large part, the conversion of the patriarch John Beccos (Veccos). Of another important Tractatus contra Graecos, notable parts are preserved in the work of the same name, written by the Dominicans of Constantinople and edited by J. Basnage, Thesaurus monumentorum ecclesiasticorum, IV, Antwerp 1725, pp. 29-80.
