URGA [ULAANBAATAR], Mission of. - It comprises the whole of Outer Mongolia, a region never evangelized, because of the extremely difficult conditions of transport across the Gobi desert and the obstacles put up by the Russian government of the tsars. After their fall, greater religious freedom was hoped for.
Moreover, modern means of communication facilitated contacts with that land. Therefore on 14 March 1922 the Mission "sui iuris" of Outer Mongolia was erected, with territory detached from the apost. vicariate of Central Mongolia (diocese of Sivantze) and entrusted to the Fathers of Scheut. By decree of 3 Dec. 1924 it received the name of "Mission of U.", the capital of the country. Since, however, the region had fallen under the control of Soviet Russia, the missionaries were never able to enter it. A report of 1921 says that the number of Catholics reached about a hundred among merchants and emigrants.
