VENTURI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. - Priest, scientist and politician, b. at Bibbiano on 11 Sept. 1746, d. at Reggio Emilia on 10 Sept. 1822.

Professor of physics and geometry at Reggio and at Modena, charged by the Este government with designing or supervising the execution of public works, in 1796 he was sent to Paris on a diplomatic mission and there carried out important research and experiments in hydraulics and electricity. Having returned to Modena, he occupied himself with science, advocating among other things the adoption of the decimal metric system and the unification of the units of measurement throughout the State and also of the public weal; preventing any extreme measure against the "reactionaries" in the dramatic days of the fall of the republican government in the face of the Austro-Russian invasion of 1799.
