Having entered the Society in 1884, after completing his studies he was sent to Rome to pursue canon law under Fr. Fr. S. Wernz. After earning a distinguished degree, he returned to Tortosa to teach dogmatic theology, remaining there until 1906, when Fr. Wernz, elected Superior General of the Order, summoned him to Rome as his successor at the Gregorian University. There he remained for 32 years until the end of his life. His work as a member of the Commission for the Codification of Canon Law (1908) and later of that for the Authentic Interpretation of the Code of Canon Law (1918); the numerous consultations for six Roman congregations of which he was a consultor (he alone resolved 300 cases for the Holy Office); and moreover the many other private consultations left him little time for the composition of individual works; however, he agreed to update in conformity with the Code of Canon Law, new decrees, and advances in scholarship the monumental work left by Fr. Wernz: *Ius decretalium*.
