VIJAYAWADA, Diocese of. - After India obtained independence, on 15 Aug. 1947, some Indian cities changed their names: thus Bezwada (v.) became V.

Conforming to this change, the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide, by decree dated 21 Oct. 1950, ruled that the name of the Curia "dioecesis Bezwuadensis" be changed to "dioecesis Vijayavadensis".
