VIKTRING. – Former Cistercian abbey, in the diocese of Gurk (Klagenfurt), in Carinthia, Austria.
The village of V. already appears in the Carolingian period, with a parish church (850), but the foundation of the monastery dates to 1142, through the efforts of the Duke of Carinthia, Bernhard of Spanheim. The first monks came from Villers-Bettnach (Lorraine), a daughter house of Morimond. The abbey church was built in the transitional Gothic Cistercian style, very similar to that of Fontenay, with three naves and a transept, with high vaults, typically austere. It was consecrated by the Archbishop of Salzburg, Eberhard, in 1202. The choir had figurative stained glass from the 14th–15th centuries. Grand Baroque high altar and side altars in wood.
