Vitalis, Abbot of Sankt Peter and Bishop of Salzburg, Saint (VITALE, ABATE DI SANKT PETER E VESCOVO SALISBURGO, SANTO)

VITALIS, Abbot of Sankt Peter and Bishop of Salzburg, Saint. - A disciple of St. Rupert (v.), with whom he came to settle in Salzburg. He died on 20 October, probably in 730, and was buried in Salzburg Cathedral.

He appears to have been a monk, like St. Rupert, whom he succeeded at his death (718) as abbot and bishop, according to the Irish-Scottish custom. He continued his work and is regarded especially as the evangelizer of the Pinzgau (the Salzach valley, near Salzburg). He took particular care to found "cellae," small religious and cultural centers. In 1459 the cause for his canonization was introduced. In 1519 the abbey of

St. Peter obtained permission to celebrate Mass and the Office in his honor, a privilege that in 1628, on the occasion of his translation to the new cathedral, was extended to the entire archdiocese. Feast on 20 September.
