ZYTOMIR (ZYTOMIERZ), DIOCESI DI

ZYTOMYR (ZYTOMIERZ), Diocese of. — Founded in 1321 and later united with Luck (v. LUCERNA) on 8 August 1798, it was divided again on 28 October 1925 and is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Mohilev. It depends on the Pontifical Commission for Russia.

The apostolic administrator, Bishop Teofilo Skalski, was imprisoned for the faith on 20 June 1926 and exiled in September 1932. At the same time, the vice-administrator, Bishop Casimiro Naskrecky, was also exiled; he had previously been imprisoned for the faith on 20 July 1929. In 1925, Z. had 66 priests, 102 churches, and 350,000 faithful. It has been devastated for many years.
