Josaphat accompanies Achab in his expedition against Ramoth; where Achab is slain, as Micheas had foretold.
Iosaphat ioyned in affinitie with wicked Achab king of Israel, goeth with him against Ramoth Galaad, four hundred false prophetes promising victorie. 14. Micheas prophecying the contrarie, 25. is put in prison. 28. Achab (notwithstanding he changeth his attire, and leaueth Iosaphat in danger) 33. is slaine.
1Now Josaphat was rich and very glorious, and was joined by affinity to Achab.Josaphat adunque fu molto ricco, e famoso, e contrasse parentela con Achab.IOSAPHAT therfore was rich and verie glorious, and was ioyned in affinitie to Achab. 2And he went down to him after some years to Samaria: and Achab at his coming killed sheep and oxen in abundance for him and the people that came with him: and he persuaded him to go up to Ramoth Galaad.E di lì a qualche anno andò a trovarlo in Samaria: e al suo arrivo Achab fece uccidere degli arieti, e de' bovi in gran numero per lui, e per la gente, che era con lui: e lo indusse ad andar seco a Ramoth di Galaad. And he went downe to him after certaine yeares into Samaria: at whose coming Achab killed muttons, and oxen very manie for him and the people that came with him: and he perswaded him to goe vp into Ramoth Galaad. 3And Achab king of Israel said to Josaphat king of Juda: Come with me to Ramoth Galaad. And he answered him: Thou art as I am, and my people as thy people, and we will be with thee in the war.E disse Achab re d'Israele a Josaphat re di Giuda: Vieni meco a Ramoth di Galaad. And Achab the king of Israel sayd to Iosaphat the king of Iuda: Come with me into Ramoth Galaad. To whom he answered: As I am thou also: as thy people; so my people also: and we wil be with thee in battel.Dixitque Achab rex Israël ad Josaphat regem Juda: Veni mecum in Ramoth Galaad. Cui ille respondit: Ut ego, et tu: sicut populus tuus, sic et populus meus: tecumque erimus in bello. 4And Josaphat said to the king of Israel: Inquire, I beseech thee, at present the word of the Lord.E Josaphat disse al re d'Israele: Di grazia, domanda un po' adesso quel, che dica il Signore.Iosaphat sayd to the king of Israel: Consult I besech thee presently the word of our Lord.Dixitque Josaphat ad regem Israël: Consule, obsecro, impræsentiarum sermonem Domini. 5So the king of Israel gathered together of the prophets four hundred men, and he said to them: Shall we go to Ramoth Galaad to fight, or shall we forbear? But they said: Go up, and God will deliver into the king’s hand.E il re d'Israele radunò quattrocento profeti, e disse loro: Dobbiam noi muover guerra a Ramoth di Galaad, ovvero starsene in riposo? E quelli dissero: Va, il Signore ne darà il dominio al re.Therfore the king of Israel gathered together of the prophetes four hundred men, and sayd to them: Shal we goe into Ramoth Galaad to fight, or sitte stil? But they sayd: Goe vp, say they, and God wil deliuer it into thy hand. At illi: Ascende, inquiunt, et tradet Deus in manu regis.
6And Josaphat said: Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may inquire also of him?E Josaphat disse: Non v'ha egli qua nissun profeta del Signore, cui noi possiamo interrogare? And Iosaphat sayd: Is there not here a prophete of our Lord, that we may enquire also of him?Dixitque Josaphat: Numquid non est hic prophetes Domini, ut ab illo etiam requiramus ? 7And the king of Israel said to Josaphat: There is one man, of whom we may ask the will of the Lord: but I hate him, for he never prophesieth good to me, but always evil: and it is Micheas the son of Jemla. And Josaphat said: Speak not thus, O king.E il re d'Israele disse a Josaphat: Havvi un uomo, a cui noi potremmo domandare qual sia il volere del Signore; ma io lo ho in ira, perchè sempre mi profetizza non del bene, ma del male: egli è Michea figliuolo di Jemla. E Josaphat disse: Non parlare, o re, in tal guisa. And the king of Israel sayd to Iosaphat: There is one man, of whom we may aske wil of our Lord: but I hate him, because he doth not prophecie me good, but euil at al times: and it is Micheas the sonne of Iemla. And Iosaphat sayd: Speake not in this maner ô king. 8And the king of Israel called one of the eunuchs, and said to him: Call quickly Micheas the son of Jemla. The king of Israel therfore called one of the Eunuches, and sayd to him: Cal quickly Micheas the sonne of Iemla.Vocavit ergo rex Israël unum de eunuchis, et dixit ei: Voca cito Michæam filium Jemla. 9Now the king of Israel, and Josaphat king of Juda, both sat on their thrones, clothed in royal robes, and they sat in the open court by the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets prophesied before them. Moreouer the king of Israel, and Iosaphat the king of Iuda, sate in their thrones, clothed with kinglie attyre, and they sate in the court beside the gate of Samaria, and al the prophetes before them.Porro rex Israël, et Josaphat rex Juda, uterque sedebant in solio suo, vestiti cultu regio: sedebant autem in area juxta portam Samariæ, omnesque prophetæ vaticinabantur coram eis. 10And Sedecias the son of Chanaana made him horns of iron, and said: Thus saith the Lord: With these shalt thou push Syria, till thou destroy it.Ma Sedecia figliuolo di Chanaana si fece delle corna di ferro, e disse: Queste cose dice il Signore: Con queste tu getterai in aria la Siria, e finalmente la calpesterai. But Sedecias the sonne of Chanaana made him hornes of yron, and sayd: Thus sayth our Lord: With these shalt thou strike Syria, til thou destroy it.Sedecias vero filius Chanaana fecit sibi cornua ferrea, et ait: Hæc dicit Dominus: His ventilabis Syriam, donec conteras eam.
11And all the prophets prophesied in like manner, and said: Go up to Ramoth Galaad, and thou shalt prosper, and the Lord will deliver them into the king’s hand.E tutti que' profeti profetizzavano nella stessa guisa, e dicevano: Vanne a Ramoth di Galaad, e avrai ottimo evento, e il Signore faranne padrone il re.And al the prophetes in like manner prophecied, and sayd: Goe vp into Ramoth Galaad, and thou shalt prosper, and our Lord wil deliuer them into the kinges hand. 12And the messenger that went to call Micheas, said to him: Behold the words of all the prophets with one mouth declare good to the king: I beseech thee therefore let not thy word disagree with them, and speak thou also good success. And the messenger that went to cal Micheas, sayd to him: Behold the wordes of al the prophetes with one mouth tel the king good thinges: I besech thee therfore that thy word also dissent not from them, and that thou speake prosperous thinges. 13And Micheas answered him: As the Lord liveth, whatsoever my God shall say to me, that will I speak. To whom Micheas answered: Our Lord liueth, whatsoeuer my God shal say to me, that wil I speake.Cui respondit Michæas: Vivit Dominus, quia quodcumque dixerit mihi Deus meus, hoc loquar. 14So he came to the king: and the king said to him: Micheas, shall we go to Ramoth Galaad to fight, or forbear? And he answered him: Go up, for all shall succeed prosperously, and the enemies shall be delivered into your hands. He therfore came to the king. To whom the king sayd: Micheas, shal we goe into Ramoth Galaad to fight, or sit stil? To whom he answered Goe ye vp: for al thinges shal fal out prosperous, and the enemies shal be deliuered into your handes.Venit ergo ad regem. Cui rex ait: Michæa, ire debemus in Ramoth Galaad ad bellandum, an quiescere ? Cui ille respondit: Ascendite: cuncta enim prospera evenient, et tradentur hostes in manus vestras.
15And the king said: I adjure thee again and again to say nothing but the truth to me, in the name of the Lord. And the king sayd: Agayne, and agayne I adiure thee, that thou speake not to me, but that which is true in the name of our Lord. 16Then he said: I saw all Israel scattered in the mountains, like sheep without a shepherd: and the Lord said: These have no masters: let every man return to his own house in peace. But he sayd: I saw al Israel disperst in the mountaynes, as sheepe without a shepheard: and our Lord sayd: These haue no maisters: let euerie man returne into his house in peace. At ille ait: Vidi universum Israël dispersum in montibus, sicut oves absque pastore: et dixit Dominus: Non habent isti dominos: revertatur unusquisque in domum suam in pace. 17And the king of Israel said to Josaphat: Did I not tell thee that this man would not prophesy me any good, but evil? And the king of Israel sayd to Iosaphat: did I not tel thee that this man did not prophecie me anie good, but these thinges that be euil?Et ait rex Israël ad Josaphat: Nonne dixi tibi quod non prophetaret iste mihi quidquam boni, sed ea quæ mala sunt ? 18Then he said: Hear ye therefore the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the army of heaven standing by him on the right hand and on the left,Ma Michea disse: Udite adunque voi la parola del Signore: io ho veduto il Signore assiso sul suo trono, e tutte le milizie del cielo, che lo circondavano a destra, e a sinistra. But he sayd: Heare ye therfore the word of our Lord: I saw our Lord sitting in his throne, and al the host of heauen assisting him on the right hand on the left.At ille: Idcirco, ait, audite verbum Domini: vidi Dominum sedentem in solio suo, et omnem exercitum cæli assistentem ei a dextris et a sinistris. 19And the Lord said: Who shall deceive Achab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall in Ramoth Galaad? And when one spoke in this manner, and another otherwise:E il Signore ha detto: Chi ingannerà Achab re d'Israele affinchè egli si muova contro Ramoth di Galaad, e vi muoia? And our Lord sayd: who shal deceiue Achab the king of Israel, that he may goe vp and fal in Ramoth Galaad. And when one sayd in this maner, and an other otherwise:Et dixit Dominus: Quis decipiet Achab regem Israël ut ascendat et corruat in Ramoth Galaad ?
20There came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said: I will deceive him. And the Lord said to him: By what means wilt thou deceive him? E il Signore disse a lui: Come lo ingannerai tu?there came forth a spirit, and stood before our Lord, and sayd: I wil deceiue him. To whom our Lord sayd: wherin wilt thou deceiue him.processit spiritus, et stetit coram Domino, et ait: Ego decipiam eum. Cui Dominus: In quo, inquit, decipies ? 21And he answered: I will go out, and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And the Lord said: Thou shalt deceive, and shalt prevail: go out, and do so.Ed egli rispose: Anderò, e sarò spirito mentitore nella bocca di tutti i suoi profeti. But he answered: I wil goe forth, and wil be a lying spirit in the mouth of al his prophetes. And our Lord sayd: Thou shalt deceiue, and shalt preuaile: goe forth, and doe so,At ille respondit: Egrediar, et ero spiritus mendax in ore omnium prophetarum ejus. 22Now therefore behold the Lord hath put a spirit of lying in the mouth of all thy prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil against thee.Il Signore adunque ha posto, come tu vedi, lo spirito di menzogna nella bocca di tutti i tuoi profeti, e il Signore stesso ha pronunziate sciagure contro di te.Now therfore, behold our Lord hath geuen the spirit of lying in the mouth of al thy prophetes, and our Lord hath spoken of thee euil thinges. 23And Sedecias the son of Chanaana came, and struck Micheas on the cheek and said: Which way went the spirit of the Lord from me, to speak to thee? And Sedecias the sonne of Chanaana came, and stroke the cheeke of Micheas, and sayd: which way passed the spirit of our Lord from me, that it should speake to thee.Accessit autem Sedecias filius Chanaana, et percussit Michææ maxillam, et ait: Per quam viam transivit spiritus Domini a me, ut loqueretur tibi ? 24And Micheas said: Thou thyself shalt see in that day, when thou shalt go in from chamber to chamber, to hide thyself.E Michea disse: Te ne avvedrai tu stesso in quel giorno, quando ti ritirerai d'una in altra stanza per nasconderti. And Micheas sayd: Thou thy self shalt see in that day, when thou shalt enter into chamber out of chamber, to be hid.Dixitque Michæas: Tu ipse videbis in die illo, quando ingressus fueris cubiculum de cubiculo ut abscondaris.
25And the king of Israel commanded, saying: Take Micheas, and carry him to Amon the governor of the city, and to Joas the son of Amelech,Ma il re d'Israele comandò, e disse: Prendete Michea, e menatelo ad Amon governatore della città, e a Gioas figliuolo di Amalech:And the king of Israel commanded, saying: Take Micheas, and lead him to Amon the gouernour of the citie, and to Ioab the sonne of Amelech. 26And say: Thus saith the king: Put this fellow in prison, and give him bread and water in a small quantity till I return in peace.E direte loro; Queste cose dice il re: Mettetelo in prigione, e dategli un po' di pane, e un poco di acqua, sino al mio felice ritornoAnd you shal say: Thus sayth the king: Cast this felow into prison, and giue him a litle bread, and a litle water, til I returne in peace.Et dicetis: Hæc dicit rex: Mittite hunc in carcerem, et date ei panis modicum, et aquæ pauxillum, donec revertar in pace. 27And Micheas said: If thou return in peace, the Lord hath not spoken by me. And he said: Hear, all ye people.E Michea disse: Se tu tornerai felicemente, non sarà vero che il Signore abbia parlato per bocca mia. E soggiunse: Popoli tutti avete inteso. And Micheas sayd: If thou returne in peace, our Lord hath not spoken in me, & he sayd: Heare al ye peoples.Dixitque Michæas: Si reversus fueris in pace, non est locutus Dominus in me. Et ait: Audite, omnes populi. 28So the king of Israel and Josaphat king of Juda went up to Ramoth Galaad. Therfore the king of Israel, and Iosaphat the king of Iuda went vp into Ramoth Galaad.Igitur ascenderunt rex Israël et Josaphat rex Juda in Ramoth Galaad. 29And the king of Israel said to Josaphat: I will change my dress, and so I will go to the battle, but put thou on thy own garments. And the king of Israel having changed his dress, went to the battle.E il re d'Israele disse a Josaphat: Io cambierò il mio abito, e così entrerò in battaglia: tu poi porta le tue vesti. And the king of Israel sayd to Iosaphat: I wil change my habite, and so I wil goe to the fight, but be thou clothed with thine owne garmentes. And the king of Israel changing his habit came to the battel. 30Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his cavalry, saying: Fight ye not with small, or great, but with the king of Israel only. And the king of Syria had commanded the captaynes of his horsemen saying: Fight not agaynst the least, or agaynst the greatest, but agaynst the king of Israel only.Rex autem Syriæ præceperat ducibus equitatus sui, dicens: Ne pugnetis contra minimum aut contra maximum, nisi contra solum regem Israël.
31So when the captains of the cavalry saw Josaphat, they said: This is the king of Israel. And they surrounded him to attack him: but he cried to the Lord, and he helped him, and turned them away from him. Therfore when the princes of the horsemen saw Iosaphat, they sayd: This is the king of Israel. And they compassed him fighting: but he cried to our Lord, and he holpe him, and turned them away from him. 32For when the captains of the cavalry saw, that he was not the king of Israel, they left him. For when the captaynes of the horsemen saw, that is was not the king of Israel, they lea•t him. 33And it happened that one of the people shot an arrow at a venture, and struck the king of Israel between the neck and the shoulders, and he said to his chariot man: Turn thy hand, and carry me out of the battle, for I am wounded. And it chanced that one of the people shot an arrow at aduenture, and stroke the king of Israel betwen the necke and the shoulders, and he sayd to his cocher: Turne thy hand, and carie me out of the battel, because I am wounded. At ille aurigæ suo ait: Converte manum tuam, et educ me de acie, quia vulneratus sum. 34And the fight was ended that day: but the king of Israel stood in his chariot against the Syrians until the evening, and died at the sunset.E finì in quel giorno la guerra. And the fight was ended in that day: moreouer the king of Israel stood in his chariote agaynst the Syrians vntil euening, and died at the sunne sette.

HE WAS JOINED BY AFFINITY TO ACHAB, — giving his daughter Athalia as wife to his son Joram, as is evident in chapter xxi, verse 6. This was the one sin of Josaphat, that he mixed partnership and marriage with the impious Achab. For Athalia, the daughter of Achab, brought idolatry into Judea, and having slain all the sons of the king, she made herself queen.
