Brief approving the Higher School of Sacred Music

ON THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY SINCE THE HIGHER SCHOOL OF SACRED MUSIC WAS FOUNDED IN ROME THROUGH THE DILIGENCE OF THE SAME SOCIETY.
1 Beloved Son of Ours, greetings and apostolic blessing — The joyful fruits which we have learned the students celebrating the School have produced have fulfilled the expectation of Our desire, which the Pious Society of St. Cecilia, under your auspices, established in Rome in the year past, and to which our beloved son Anthony Piccardius, Moderator of the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Mary, has generously opened his residence. This higher School, to which both lay men and especially priests from both branches of the clergy, having completed the course of theology and being free from all other business, come together in order that they may become distinguished in the science and art of sacred music, we indeed judge to be most useful, so that that restoration of the same art and science may be brought to the desired outcome, to which we have already from the beginning of our pontificate directed our mind and thought. But truly, when one considers what excellent Christian formation of the soul, and what abundance of ecclesiastical doctrine and discipline of sacred knowledge of music ought to be available to our students of music so that they may be equal to recalling it to the approved form of musical composition, it will easily be clear how great and how much is the difficulty in ordinary schools of music of teaching and learning the same skillfully: and this especially because the talents and practice of those who celebrate the aforesaid schools remain almost entirely absorbed in the study of profane music. Moved by this consideration, we in the Motu Proprio which we issued on the twenty-second day of November in the year nineteen hundred and three, while we were striving that such higher schools should be instituted and fostered by the care of Catholics, we also opportunely admonished that the Church herself ought to embrace these with her particular providence. From which things you will understand, Beloved Son of Ours, how grateful we have held the diligence of the Caecilian Society and with what inclination of mind we adorn its most noble undertaking with deserved praise, and of our own accord strengthen it with our authority. We are confident indeed that the studious band of musicians, which in the newly founded School seeks to take up the discipline as companion to the most holy rites, will so achieve its purpose that from it there may come forth to promote the hoped-for increase of divine worship most excellently prepared. To nourish and increase this hope we are confident will not be lacking the assistance of pious Catholics, by which means may be supplied to our limited resources the ability of establishing and advancing this higher School of the City in the stable manner which we desire. Meanwhile, as a pledge of divine favors and likewise a witness of our paternal benevolence, we most lovingly impart the apostolic blessing to you, Beloved Son of Ours, and also to the President of the aforesaid Society of St. Cecilia, and to the masters and students of the new School in the Lord.
2 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, on 4 November in the year nineteen hundred and eleven, in the ninth year of our pontificate.

CILIA, POST ANNUM PRIMUM EX QUO SCHOLA SUPERIOR MUSICAE SACRAE OB EIUSDEM SOCIETATIS SOLLERTIAM ROMAE CONDITA EST.
1 Dilecte Fili Noster, salutem et apostolicam benedictionem — Expleverunt desiderii Nostri expectationem laetabiles fructus quos retulisse accepimus alumnos Scholam celebrantes quam superiore anno Pia Societas a Sancta Caecilia, te auspice, Romae excitavit, cuique dilectus filius Antonius Piccardius, Moderator Congregationis Filiorum Mariae Immaculatae, aedes suas patere liberaliter voluit.
