Motu proprio establishing the Council for the Work of the Preservation of the Faith

Motu proprio of Pope Leo XIII ·

LEO PP. XIII
MOTU PROPRIO
BY WHICH A COUNCIL FOR THE WORK OF THE PRESERVATION OF THE FAITH IS INSTITUTED*

1 We issued a letter two years ago to the Most Eminent man acting in Our stead at Rome, in which We lamented that unbridled license was being permitted in this very City to the promoters of heresies. For Divine Providence has constituted this city as the principal seat of the Catholic name, and has chosen it alone from all others so that, as has been done freely by its power for so many centuries, the light of evangelical doctrine might be diffused throughout the entire world. This most noble and truly divine office of the Roman See clearly declares how unjust it is and how fraught with danger that temples and schools here should be opened by the propagators of heresies, to disseminate wicked and hostile opinions among Our flock. In order therefore to meet these new inconveniences as much as lay in Our power, We most willingly approved the recent work of Praeservationis Fidei, which had been undertaken by Our counsel and efforts. Yet the dangers and harms are miserably increasing day by day, and for this reason, impelled by the charity of Apostolic solicitude, We have determined and resolved to furnish the aforesaid work with stronger protection, and to place over it a special council of Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church to direct it. Hence the Urban Curial officials, in whose diligence We place the greatest confidence in this matter, will have greater aids to fulfill the duties of the priesthood abundantly and with all fruitfulness; hence also the excellent men who have given their names to this work up to the present time for its advancement with great praise will take heart for greater achievements.

2 Wherefore by the present Motu Proprio We institute a Council or Commission to direct and promote the Work of Praeservationis Fidei. This Commission shall consist of certain Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church whom the Pontiff shall designate; and We choose as the first

3 Seraphinus CretoniFranciscus De Paula CassettaPetrus RespighiSebastianus MartinelliIosephus Calasanctius Vives.

4 As to what duties and offices the aforesaid Council ought to undertake, and by what laws it ought to be governed, We prescribe in a separate document.

5 We will and command that these decrees remain valid and firm by Our authority.

6 Given at Rome at St. Peter's on the twenty-fifth day of November 1902, in the twenty-fifth year of Our Pontificate.

MOTU PROPRIO
QUO INSTITUITUR CONSILIUM PRO OPERE CONSERVATIONIS FIDEI*

1 Litteras ante annos duos dedimus ad virum Eminentissimum vice Nostra Romae fungentem, quibus effrenatam licentiam adsertoribus haeresum ipsa in Urbe permitti dolebamus.

3 Seraphinum CretoniFranciscum De Paula CassettaPetrum RespighiSebastianum MartinelliIosephum Calasanctium Vives.

6 Datum Romae apud Sanctum Petrum die vicesima quinta Novembris 1902, Pontificatus Nostri anno vicesimo quinto.

MOTU PROPRIO

3 Serafino CretoniFrancesco De Paula CassettaPietro RespighiSebastiano MartinelliGiuseppe Calasanzio Vives.
