Bull on the solemn profession of the three substantial vows by regulars

Bull of Pope Pius V ·

Concerning the solemn profession of the three substantial vows to be made according to the Rule, and the election of one of the approved Rules, by all who in various congregations and houses live under voluntary obedience and outside the solemn vow of Religion, and wear a habit distinct from that of secular priests.

1 Pius, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.

2 Fearing the slippery way of life of those who, bearing the form of regulars, do not renounce their own will, nor profess any of the approved Rules, when most of them, following their own inclination, some inflamed by hatred, others while they obtain less what they desire, others having squandered or misappropriated things and transferred them to themselves or their relatives in order to escape accountability, some even foreseeing that inquiry will be made into their own conduct, as if about to obtain impunity, withdraw from their association as they please, and casting off its insignia, take on secular dress. Hence grave and dangerous offences are stirred up daily among the people, when those whom they believe to be perpetually bound to regular discipline, they see again, even where they have become accustomed, after so many years and having abandoned and left, often in unworthy ways, the life institute to which they had dedicated themselves, free and unbound wandering forth into the world. Since therefore it is fitting that whoever takes up its arms should pursue that military service, we have determined to take this matter concerning the aforesaid into consideration, so that, with the faculty of either remaining or departing once proposed to individuals, a certain and thereafter immovable observance of regular discipline ought to be perpetually observed in the sodalities themselves.

3 § 4. Therefore, by the fullness of apostolic authority attributed to us, we decree that all priors, superiors and other general, provincial and conventual presidents, as well as canons and brothers of St. George in Alga of Venice and Hermits of St. Jerome, otherwise of Blessed Peter of Pisa, and of all and any other congregations whatsoever, as well as churches, houses and convents, living in common and under voluntary obedience and outside the solemn vow of Religion, whose habit is distinct from that of secular priests, who wish to embrace Religion and to make solemn regular profession, shall in their respective convents and houses, within the space of twenty-four hours after our delegate shall have made known these letters to them, openly and freely deliberate and declare this; then, having convoked as soon as possible, through each of such congregations, a general or other supreme chapter, according to the custom of each congregation, and there having elected one, under which they may live, from the approved Rules, into which the greater part of the votes of that chapter shall have consented, they shall within a month solemnly make profession of the three substantial vows according to the Rule, and in it both they themselves and those hereafter entering and professing shall bear perpetual service to the Most High. And thus professed, either let them be confirmed in their respective priories, superiorships, presidencies, administrations and offices, or let them be transferred to others, as it shall seem more useful and expedient to each congregation and to their superiors.

4 § 2. But those who, after a year has already passed while remaining in the congregation itself, shall have refused within the aforesaid time to make profession, shall be cast out with the habit of Religion removed, and with all accounts of those received and administrators rendered, even in chains if necessary, nor shall they hereafter be permitted to dwell any longer in any houses or convents of the same congregation. Wherefore we command all and each of the priors, superiors, generals, provincials and conventuals and others, of whatsoever dignity and name, ministers, as well as convents, canons, brothers and persons of such congregations, that they humbly receive our aforesaid statute, not awaiting any other command or declaration of our mind, and take care to observe it diligently. But if perchance any should contend to persist in that state in which they now are, which we altogether abolish and annul, contrary to this our statute, we deprive each and every one of all dignity, office, administration and benefice, and decree them perpetually unworthy for the future, and bind them also with the sentence of excommunication by that very fact.

5 § 3. Notwithstanding the foundations and institutions, decrees and customs of the aforesaid congregations, houses and convents, confirmed by oath, apostolic confirmation or any other firmness; also the privileges, exemptions and apostolic indults granted and confirmed to them and their superiors and persons, and to each of them by whatsoever Roman Pontiffs, our predecessors and ourselves and the Apostolic See, even by way of perpetual statute, and by initiated and stipulated contract, and otherwise under whatsoever tenors and forms, and with whatsoever clauses and decrees, in general and in particular, conceded and confirmed; and also other reforms, howsoever often and at whatsoever time made and promulgated, and whatsoever other indulgences and special and general apostolic letters, of whatsoever tenor they may be, by which, not expressed in the present or wholly not inserted therein, their effect might be hindered in any way or deferred, and of which and of all their tenors special mention ought to be had in our letters, all which things, as abrogated, contrary to the tenor of these present letters, we do not wish to avail anyone in anything. § 4. Furthermore, we command these present letters to be published at the public doors of the basilica of the Prince of the Apostles of the City and of the Apostolic Chancery and in the area of the Campus Florae, and copies of them to be affixed in the customary manner.

6 § 5. And we also will that copies of these present letters, even if printed, and sealed with the seal of the ecclesiastical prelate or his curia and the hand of a public notary, shall have the same faith everywhere, in judgment and outside it, as these present letters themselves would have, if they were shown or exhibited there. Let no one therefore at all...
