Odoardus clericus
Decretal on the insolvent cleric Odoardus (Liber Extra 3.23.3)
Liber Extra (X) 3.23.3
CAP. III. 1
If a cleric does not have the means by which to satisfy his creditors, he ought not to be excommunicated nor otherwise molested; he shall nevertheless provide security, at least by oath, for payment, when he shall come to a more prosperous fortune.
The same to the Dean and a Canon of Toul.
1 Odoardus,2 a cleric, set forth that, when P., a cleric, D., a layman, and certain others had sued him before the official of the archdeacon of Reims concerning certain debts, the same official, upon him acknowledging such debts, but being unable to pay on account of lack of means, promulgated a sentence of excommunication against him. (And below:) We command that, if it shall be established that the aforesaid Odoardus is wholly or in part unable to pay the debts aforesaid,3 you shall relax that sentence without any difficulty, having first received from him4 suitable security, so that, if he shall come to a more prosperous fortune, he shall pay the aforesaid debts.

CAP. III. 1
Idem Decano et I. Canonico Tullensibus.
